Restrict videos when post is in more than 1 category

  • When a post is in more than one category or sub-category, is there an easy way to restrict the videos displayed to only one category?

    The Same Category Posts widget works perfectly when a post is in a single category, but if a post is in a second category or a sub-category, irrelevant videos show up.

    This happens because it was necessary to create an extra category (“Archive”) to make posts display in the slider at top. So if a post in the Theatre category and a post in the Cinema category are to be seen in the slider, both go into the Archive Category as well. This results in a situation in which a post in the Cinema category will display “same category” posts about Theatre and vice versa. Obviously, I want only Cinema posts to show up besides articles about Cinema, etc.

    I used to be able to do this manually with the help of the AVH Extended Categories Widget, which created options in the Same Category Posts widget to show exactly what I wanted. Unfortunately, the AVH Extended Categories widget has not been updated in 3 years and it started creating a conflict with the most recent update of WordPress, so I had to disable it.

    Obviously, one possibility is to get rid of the extra “Archive” category and figure out some other way to select videos to show up in the home page slider. But since it was possible to restrict videos with the help of the AVH widget, I assume there must be some other plug in or method that will do the job.

    We’ve heard this a lot before that confuses sorting with sub-categories.

    Would it suffice if I supported an option excluding sub-categories?

    I think what I am looking for is more like an option to exclude a category while retaining a subcategory.

    My website is organized like this:

    CAGEGORY: ARCHIVE

    SUB-CATEGORIES: CINEMA – THEATRE – ATTRACTIONS – NIGHT/LIFE/STYLE

    Currently, if I check the box to place an article in CINEMA sub-category, it shows only CINEMA articles. If I check the boxes to place an article in the CINEMA sub-category and the ARCHIVE category, the Same Category widget displays everything in ARCHIVE: CINEMA, THEATRE, ATTRACTIONS, and NIGHT/LIFE/STYLE. If I go into the Same Category Posts widget options to exclude ARCHIVE, then everything disappears, including CINEMA. I want to avoid displaying other articles in ARCHIVE but leave articles in CINEMA.

    I think the problem is that there is a post in the parent category and at the same time in the sub-category.
    It would not be enough to assign the sub-category to the post?

    That is indeed the problem.

    As noted above, the article is assigned to the parent category because that it what makes it show up in the slider for featured articles on the home page.

    Up until the latest WordPress update, I was able to use the AVH Extended Categories plugin to prevent parent category articles from showing up in the Same Category Posts widget (the AVH plugin added a check-box to each article, which I could use to select which sub-category of articles would display). I was hoping there was an alternative method.

    I would say you should use for your featured articles a WordPress ?Tag“ to select it with your slider or don’t make that featured category as parent. I don’t understand why that featured category should be a parent category?

    There are so many ways to organize your posts, media and sites with WordPress taxonomies in some kind like Custom Post Types. You don’t have to use each time and only “hierarchical” structures.

    My WordPress theme, Color Mag, does not allow for using a Tag to put a post in the homepage slider. It must be a Category.

    “Archive” acts as the parent category for the sub-categories because that is the only way to see all article from all subcategories in chronological order, which is something my readers asked for.

    The linked article seems to be about creating an image slideshow and organizing media into categories, which does not help me.

    All I was hoping for was a simple way to include a Sub-Category while excluding a Category. I know this can be done because I was able to do it with the help of the AVH widget until the latest WordPress update. Apparently there is no similar, up-to-date widget that can act as a replacement.

    Ok! I checked the feature in the morning and it’s not far away to give it you later as release: “Exclude categories without exclude sub-categories”.

    I upload a new version 1.1.3 with the new option in the Filter panel > “Perform the exclusion without children”.
    If you check that option you can exclude children from the select excluded category.
