restriction editor choosing role not working

i have created a custom user role using code snippet plug in. it is set up correctly. i assigned a new user role and it worked, tested it. all good. i have then left it then gone back to do some final tests and it is just not working. i assign the custom user role i tick the box to chose which users can see the content, and then press update. go back onto it and the box is then unticked? it wasnt doing this at first but now is. i can tick all other boxes like admin, customer, subscriber etc but not the ones i set up. they originally worked but not now? someone help i dont know what ive done wrong!!!!
