Retina image swap

    first of all: are retina images supposed to be supported by the free version of this theme?
    The theme description says they are, but at least in my case, there are no @2x versions being created when I upload images.
    However, the retina.js is still embedded in the code and tries to swap all images for their @2x versions. Since these @2x images have not been created, 404 errors are thrown and the non-retina images remain in place. So far, so good. Now, I installed the plugin “404 to 301” (in order to design a custom “page not found” page), with the consequence that retina.js does not get a 404 error anymore and removes all the images from my site, leaving just empty placeholders.
    What is going wrong here?
