Reusable block says: the block cannot be displayed inside itself.
The WP site is in Dutch, so I don’t know the correct translation.
It showed up after the last update to 5.7Iam unable to use or change the reusable blocks, and it seems not possible to make new ones with a name
known problem?

It is really annoying, as I used many reusable gutenberg blocks wich don’t function anymore now
I reinstalled Worpress that seems to have helped in some degree.
Dashboard > Updates > “Re-Install now”
Supposed to keep all of your content, but make a backup to be sure.Seems all the reusable block that were inserted in the pages have changed into normal blocks, so I have to replace them all by the original reusable blocks.
It seems that all original reusable block in the editor have survived, luckily.
I will give you an update after finishing tracking and replacing some 100 reusable blocks across 100+ pages ??
Very glad it seems to function again ??- This reply was modified 3 years, 6 months ago by hansbeen.
Update: I have to replace all the reusable block, as they don’t function anymore. Bummer :-(.
Furthermore it seems now that all blocks cannot be mover up/down anymore.
Any ideas someone? I’m running out of…..- This reply was modified 3 years, 6 months ago by hansbeen.
It keeps getting stranger and stranger…
The reusable blocks I made and inserted yesterday are are not visible anymore today in the webpage. In the edeting area they are visable as empty horizontally longstreched blocks with a + in them. And sometimes with a notification “the block cannot be displayed inside itself”.
Any idea what may be causing this?- This reply was modified 3 years, 6 months ago by hansbeen.
Yes, really annoying. WP 5.7 broke all my reusable blocks. Even the Amazon kindle block from the WP developement team is now wonky on 5.7. Hopefully they know this and will patch up to fix these bugs soon. And hopefully all the old blocks will work again. I don’t want to go back to manually re-edit them. Tired of seeing: “Block cannot be rendered inside itself.”

Strange that not more people are reporting this
I got the message (in german) as well.
“Ein Block kann nicht in sich selbst ausgeführt werden”
Happened while inserting a reuasable block.
Than changing it into a group, because i wanted to save it slightly changed under a different name as a second reusable blockI’ve been having this issue, too.
I’m seeing it on fresh installs, default themes, no plugins. WPEngine hosting (they can’t figure out anything on their end).
For my site, it’s rendered me unable to work, especially because Reusable blocks (and sometimes adjacent blocks) seem to be deleting themselves w/o my direction.
Some people have had trouble with certain plugins, or re-installing WP — and I thought that helped at one point, but the issues returned.
FWIW – I’m running into this problem as well when I try to convert a reusable block to a group.
I thought I waited long enough for most of these growing pains to be worked out before switching over to Gutenberg. I guess not.
Reusable blocks not working here too. Disappearing, not allowing placement (cannot display inside itself), or acting like it’s gonna work but showing up as just a box with a plus… frustrating. WP 5.7.1
UPDATE:
I made “some” progress (but still not working). If I edit a reusable block in the page where all the reusable blocks are listed (you can get there by the options of a reusable block, or yourwebsite/wp-admin/edit.php?post_type=wp_block ). It seems OK, but as soon as I place that reusable block in a page and save that page, the content of the reusable block in the list becomes blank. So posting the reusable block blanks it content.
Anyone on how to progress. You see the problem? ??
I cannot understand that no-one is bothering about this ??
Or is there some specific reason we get this error?I have the same problem. Yesterday all the reusable blocks disappeared. If I edit a page containing reusable blocks I get:
Il blocco non può essere visualizzato all’interno di se stesso.
that is, ?Block cannot be rendered inside itself.? That is why I hate visual editors. I never had those problems by the classic editor writing in HTML and using CSS classes, as well as import plug-ins. How can I fix that without adding again all the reusable blocks to all pages?
Giving this issue a bump as well as describing some additional issues I’m having with reusable blocks since the update…
Like many here, several (but not all of my reusable blocks) are now displaying “block cannot be rendered inside itself”. When I open a post to edit, sometimes the reusable blocks will display as they should. Then randomly change to “block cannot be rendered” or just disappear altogether leaving an empty + box in its place.
I’ve tried updating the blocks in the manage reusable blocks menu to “rebuild them”. This fix works for about 5 minutes and then back to “block cannot be rendered” it goes.
During this work around, I’ve also noticed some of the content in the reusable blocks are completely gone. I’ve had to rebuild these also (using an internet archive tool to see old versions of my pages).Something else that appears broken is the ability to add certain reusable blocks to groups. It seems like if the reusable blocks had a group itself, it can no longer be added to a group but I’m not certain on that. Just seems to be the case with my blocks.
These are just the issues I’ve run into in the last 24 hours since updating. I waited months to update for a fear the update would break something. I was right.
I really hope the WP development team reads these threads and are working on a solution. There wasn’t an issue with reusable blocks in the first place, so I just don’t understand why they even messed with it in the first place. Every update provides more problems than solutions. Judging by the age of this thread, the update has been out for more than 2 months and no patch fix.
Disappointing yet somehow, not surprising.
