Just to see how things might have changed in NextGEN, I activated it and deactivated the Nextcellent Gallery. However, all the displays broke with a message that said the gallery was missing. In NextGEN, I can go to manage galleries and see them all and work with each. However no thumbnails display in the posts. I cannot insert a gallery to display in a post I am in the process of writing when NextGEN is active, it does not see any of them although manage galleries function works fine.

    There are two possibilities:
    1. Something has changed in NextGEN gallery which no longer sees the old DB tables
    2. Something has changed in Nextcellent Gallery that alters the old DB tables
    3. Maybe a combination of the two

I am writing here to report the behavior in case you know what is going on and can steer me in a direction to maintain compatibility. I will also post on NextGEN support forum.

    Thank you

  • @acekin: this seems a bit weird, since my experiences are quite different. I’ve switched between NextGEN 2.0.x and NextCellent Gallery several times on my testsites and almost everything works.

What I’ve noticed not working when going from NextGEN to NextCellent are the albums: most of the albums just do not show up, I have needed to re-create them. If you are displaying galleries throught albums, your experience is quite probable.
But since current NextGEN still works ok with old shortcodes so I would encourage using them to show gallery thumbnails: [nggallery id=x] – that is what NextCellent anyway uses.

I have since contacted Photocrati and explained them the problem. They were curious to see what might have changed and asked for access to the site. I gave them what they asked for and now am waiting for them to find the time to go and look. This is one reason I am considering switching back to NextGEN, developer responsiveness. I have not heard from the Nextcellent Gallery developer in any shape or forum whereas NextGEN team is willing to look into a problem that is not directly caused by or related to the use of their software. By the way, during the problem infested period of their transition to version 2.x they were extremely responsive to my problems and communicated with me off the forum via direct e-mail. Support is the key element here.

For the record, I got NextGEN 2.0.61 working by giving it a Heimlich maneuver! I reset all the settings to their defaults and whatever was choking it dislodged and NGG 2.0.61 started working. I am seriously considering going back to NextGEN Gallery, their team was very willing to help me out.

NextCellent has clearly been on par with NGG in support to my concerns – hence I also was willing to help with a Finnish translation of the plugin.

    Hi acekin,
    thanks for your comments.
I guess what you said is right. I’m not giving full attention to the forum in these days. My apologies for that.

After the next release, I’m going to give full support to anyone who need some help. That will be before May. I would hate to start something and then let it derail because some sort of perceived indifference.

Currently we are building a wikipedia around the plugin. I say ‘we’ because I’m confident many other will be contributing to the idea, similar of what is happening just right now.

I’ve been looking the forum from time to time and I believe the community deserves a better support from my part. Many other developers are currently helping without even mentioning, so this is a big THANKS to them, in a way. For other side, I understand your feelings about the support. In some way is reflecting what many users needs, even the plugin is free or not. So this is a thanks to you to letting me know.

If you want to stick with NextGen, please be my guest. Nextcellent is trying to close a gap to those people which found some trouble using the new version. And I was (and I am) one of them.

The plugin is also trying to be a stable one, and when I’m saying ‘NextCellent is an alternative to most people so they can sleep with peace of mind’ (see readme.txt) I really mean that.

I just hope to meet the expectations!

    Again, thanks for your comments.

Better late than never, best of luck to you and to Nextcellent Gallery. I have made my switch back to NextGEN and it is working fine now. By the way, two other questions I posted have been waiting for a response:

I sure hope Nextcellent will be ready for the WP 3.9 roll out which will, according to its notes, will break most plugins that put an icon on the editor toolbar.
