• Since the WP 5.0 update there is no longer any option to view the revision history for any page. The option checkbox no longer shows up in the screen options and no history option appears anywhere else. This has happened on all my sites. I am not running any caching plugins nor any database optimizers. I am running the sites on WPEngine which is a WP optimized hosting provider. Can anyone shed light on whether this is a feature that was dropped or has something to do with the hosting environment?

  • I installed plugin WP Revisions Control, set up number of revisions and the revisions finally started working.
A significant bug of wordpress developers!

Fully agree with @jigsaw. A similar thing happened to me, I accidentally edited my published post with a new draft (no clue how this happened? now I am doubting if WordPress has done something…) and with my surprise no revisions. How can they do this? Anyways I shall try solution given by @warmy.
    Really disappointed guys ..

    @ppant tell pleaze about result

@warmy WP Revision Control plug-in works perfectly. Thanks for saving my time.
    Cheers!

Yep wpengine turns off revisions. Another gotcha from wpengine, they do not support wordmove.

Also it can be caused by some plugin which is outside of WP Core developers power/scope. You can try to check with ‘Health Check & Troubleshooting’ plugin whether it turned fixed if you temporarily disable all plugins and/or extra theme. During this the non-admin visitors will see the website as usual, with no changes.

I checked my site with this and it shows this issue is caused by some plugin cos revison works perfectly (both in gutenber & classic editor) if i disable all plugin. (I’m with freshest wp version, and not on wpengine or other managed host.)

    hope helps,
    W

Hi, I use WordPress 5.3.2 and Gutenberg.
The “Revision” tab appears only from the second revision and not after the first.

Thanks JoshuaDoshua (@dkampdesign) – I didn’t know WP Engine turned this off by default. This was an extremely helpful bit of information!

Gone on all my sites and some have very few and different plugins. Inactivated all plugins on one site and Revisions are still absent. Added “define(‘WP_POST_REVISIONS’, true);” to wp-config.php and still nothing.

Hours of wasted time trying to fix this. Earlier posts say we’re supposed to switch to Gutenberg? Are they serious? Switch to editor of their choice each time? Do they have any idea how many times some of us use Revisions?

Yet one more plugin to repair the mess WP has become. In time I will escape WP.

I ran into this editing an older post. No Revisions window and no option to turn it on. Saved the post after some further edits and there it was. Checked the Screen options panel and it had been re-added in first position. Odd.

Same problem… Wp 5.7.1 / disable lot of plugins / revision are on the database.

Don’t understand, somebody find the solution ?

Same here. I went to a client website to look get dates and times of revisions for billing and none were visible – the ‘Revisions’ link doesn’t exist any longer. I spent hours looking into it and trying to find an answer but came up empty handed – as I’m sure you can all imagine.

I already added the revisions code in wp_config a couple of days go and made edits but still no revisions on a frequently updated page. Also tried ‘WP Revisions Control but still no revisions.

Then I thought I would check other websites and the same thing. Different websites, different content, different plugins, different hosts… No revisions.

Thanks @iwanwilaga for idea, temporary activation of “Health Check & Troubleshooting” plugins “Troubleshooting” mode solved the issue. Revisions appeared and no other action was required.

@martinkoss have you managed to solve it since then? “Revisions for billing” is in what context? You mean in WooCommerce some screen? Or billing as a custom post type?

Sometimes caching can be a problem, if it’s wrongly set up (on some hosts can be even on server level caching..) and caches the backend as well.. Make sure all kinds of cache is emptied.

Also maybe WP database transients cleared..

Sometimes at the WP post editor (classic) at the top in the ‘Screen Options’ the revisions are unchecked..

These are some common issues besides the good old plugin- or theme-conflicts, in my opinion.

@maksimurasov Cool, happy that it was useful, man. So, which plugin/theme made the troubles in your case?

    Best,
    W

Thank you very much @joshuadoshua – your comment regarding WP Engine disabling revisions saved me a LOT of time.

I had no idea they did this, and would’ve wasted AGES trying to figure out why I couldn’t just switch it on…..
