Rewrite Rule Causing BIG Problem
-
One of the sites I help out with has a big problem. At one time the site was on Moveable Type. It has since gone through b2evolution and then to WordPress and moved to a new host. Now, spammers are sending requests to an old MT script that does not exist on the site. But the rewrite rules redirect the requests to the index page and since there are so many of these requests it is bringing the whole server down. This is a shared hosting situation.
The host is really working with us but the site is going down multiple times a day because of this. Obviously we can’t stop all the requests from coming in but we’d really like to stop the rewrite rule so the requests generate a 404 error.
What are the implications for deleting the rewrite rule altogether? If that is a bad idea, what other steps might we take? Is it feasible to bypass the rewrite rule for that one, non-existent script?
