Hello, our client’s site is hosted on 20i.com. I receive the rewrites_not_working error on activation. I’ve tried the pass thru method but no webp images are delivered. I have asked 20i about this as the htaccess file looked fine to me, they’ve advised that they think the plugin is trying to add rewrites to the upload folder specifically which is something that isn’t allowed on 20i services.

Please could you confirm if their assumption is correct?

    Hello @user9876789,

    Thanks for your message.

The via .htaccess method is the recommended and the best option.

Why doesn’t support allow you to set rules in the .htaccess file? Please ask them if they can add Nginx rules then.

    Best,
    Mateusz

Thanks for the speedy reply, they’ve replied with:

We don’t allow .htaccess rules to be added within the upload folder due to security reasons. We wouldn’t be able to add the Nginx rules as our main servers are using Apache. Is it possible that the plugin authors would be able to provide .htaccess rules to add to the main WordPress .htaccess file at all?

@user9876789 Can’t add rules to .htaccess file in /uploads directory only?

My plugin adds rules in the .htaccess file in the /wp-content directory. This file is also not supported?

I will be grateful for information on this matter. I’ll try to think of something then.

Hello, I messaged them with your response, they’ve come back with:

I see – I’m afraid it’s not something that is possible in this case – What I’d suggest in this case, is what my colleague above had recommended, in which it might be worth if the plugin author could look into providing .htaccess rules to add to the main WordPress .htaccess file here.

@user9876789 Thank you for your commitment. Please send me a screenshot of the Help Center tab in the plugin settings. This will allow me to better investigate this matter.

This is all of them except the ones titled Filters and WordPress as they have identifying info, if they’re needed I can send them over privately.

    Thanks @user9876789!

I have contacted the support of this hosting and have more information. It’s not like the .htaccess file is blocked – hosting is blocking mod_rewrite for the /wp-content/uploads directory. No matter what .htaccess file the rules are in.

Ah OK, assume there’s no workaround for that and we wont be able to use the plugin? It’s a shame as it’s a good plugin, it works great on the site dev (which is not on 20i).

Hello, could you confirm if you’re working on an alternative solution for this or if it’s a case of we can’t use this plugin while on 20i?

    Hello @user9876789,

I’m sorry for the lack of response. It got away from me somewhere.

I checked it, even set up an i20 hosting account so I could test it better. Unfortunately, this does not work on this hosting, and the hosting itself does not want to cooperate. They are blocking all rewrites for the path /wp-content/uploads.
