    Hi there,

I did search the forums first and I found a handful of threads where a similar question was asked, but there was never any solution and then the thread just timed out and got archived.

I am referencing this guide for rich pins. My site is validated already, Pinterest says I’m good to go. However, the pin description that is getting pulled into Pinterest is my excerpt, NOT my metadata description that I am entering via Yoast. From what I’ve read I thought what you enter into Yoast is supposed to be the information that gets pulled for rich pins? My excerpts are really long. I only want those to show up on my blog page archive or post grid carousel blocks. I want the data I put into Yoast to be what shows up on my pins.

I contacted Pinterest. They said this is “expected behavior. Rich Pins automatically sync information from the associated website, not the meta description part, so the edits will need to be made in the web page rich Pin metadata”. Are they saying that Yoast has no bearing on Pinterest at all?

I think I’m clearly missing something, I appreciate yall’s help.

We are sorry for the trouble you’re experiencing with Pinterest not showing the expected meta description inputted in the Yoast SEO.

First off, checking the given page URL via Pinterest validator we do see the description it is fetching is:

When I worked at Grand Canyon National Park explaining hikes, transportation, and tours to visitors, I had the opportunity to explore below rim every single day. I hiked Rim to Rim multiple times. This route changed me forever, and to pay it forward I offer you this free downloadable guide on how to plan your own self-guided Rim to Rim backpacking trek!

As checking the page source code of the same page, this description is in OpenGraph meta og:description which the social networks fetch giving priority over meta description content.

Can you confirm whether that was the description that you expect to appear in the rich pins?

And for your information, the meta description on the page source has the content:

How to plan your own self-guided Rim to Rim backpacking trek in Grand Canyon National Park, written by a former park employee.

@suascat_wp thanks for getting back to me!

Yeah the second shorter one (the meta description on the page source) is the information I put into Yoast. The longer one that’s populating under og: description is the excerpt that I entered into Post > Excerpt within WordPress itself.

I kind of thought Yoast would override the excerpt when it comes to what shows up in Google search results, social previews, and Pinterest Rich Pins. That’s not the case? Do other people leave their Excerpt field empty? If I do that, then on my “All Blog Posts” page there will be no excerpts?

Google and the search engines consider meta description content for showing the content in the search results preview.

Whereas, OpenGraph meta is basically for social previews.

The excerpt field is basically used for showing the excerpt content on the blog post depending upon the theme support.

If you don’t want your excerpt field content to appear on the og:description, we would advise that you input your custom description content within the Social(tab) of Yoast SEO metabox. This content should overwrite the Excerpt field content.

    We hope this helps!

@suascat_wp Oooooooh. I thought I had read that social previews will automatically pull whatever you put under the “SEO” tab, so you don’t need to complete the “Social” tab unless you want it to differ. I’ll go in and copy/paste my descriptions from the SEO tab over to the Social tab. Thank you for clarifying!
