• This is a “beginner’s” question: If I add an RSS icon to my blog website, does it allow others to subscribe to my blog or does it only send me feeds from other blogs?

  • An RSS icon by itself will do nothing. It will just be a pretty image. You would need to use it as a link to your site’s feed if you want to allow others to subscribe to your blog.

Thanks. I have been looking for good step-by-step descriptions of how to install an RSS link, but nothing seems to give me precise directions. Do you know where I can find such instructions?

    Site url?

yes, please. For example, I just found a site that purports to tell one how to install an RSS feed. But when I started to watch the video, it was talking about bringing links to other sites to my blog–not bringing readers to my site.
I have a book on WordPress and it doesn’t do a good job of explaining how I set up an RSS to link to my site.

Sorry – can you post a link to your site, please?

    I didn’t realize that’s what you wanted.
Thanks for your patience with me.

did you put it there? or was it already there? You can tell how “green” I am.

No – it was there all along. ??

I didn’t see the RSS icon. I thought you needed that to have a feed, I hate to keep bothering you but where or how did you find the link?

In addition to being “green” (remember, “it’s not easy being green!”), I had an accident today & fractured my wrist and hit my head, So I am a little more clueless than usual!!!

    Ow! Poor you! ??

WordPress creates an RSS feed automatically. On a site using pretty permalinks like yours, that feed is always at https://your_domain_name/feed. What you might want to think about next (when your head stops hurting) is whether you want to advertise this feed to your readers and how, You mentioned an icon, yes. Do you already have a suitable image? If so, where would you want to place it on your site (hint: the sidebar is often a popular choice)?

That’s fine. Do I log in as admin and add the icon there? Or can it be added w/o logging in?
Wow, you’re being super helpful. what a great asset you are!

You’d need to login to add the icon/link. Have you uploaded the icon yet? If so, where to?

what a great asset you are!

Thank you! We try our best. ??

No, I haven’t. I can look in my “Dummies” book to see if it tells me what to do. The book has been helpful for some things, not others.

To make things real easy, I’d suggest uploading the icon to your site’s Media Library via Media -> Add new. You should be using a fairly small image – probably less than 100px square.

Once the image has been uploaded, locate it in your Library and select Edit. at the bottom of the page that follows, you’ll see a File Url like http:/example.xom/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/rss.png

Copy that url, paste it here and we’ll see if we can come up with the markup you need to add to your site.
