Until recently I have been succusfully loading an RSS feed from my SMF-run forum to my website (forum preview on several pages), using both standard RSS widgets and the BNS SMF Feeds plugin. All were working correctly.

Recently I have done some updates on both the SMS forum and my WordPress, including adding some new plugins, and it seems that since then all the widgets have an error in producing the RSS feed from the forum. I don’t get any error reports in the backend, but I do on the website itself:

RSS Error: A feed could not be found. A feed with an invalid mime type may fall victim to this error, or SimplePie was unable to auto-discover it.. Use force_feed() if you are certain this URL is a real feed.

The address that is mentioned as the feed that can not be found, actually opens fine when you paste it in a web browser, and had been working in the plugin fine before.

Is this to do with some other new plugin or theme blocking something, or maybe my SMF forum got blacklisted by WordPress or my host?

  • When I click on the forum RSS feed link that I was thinking was from your SMF forum I get a blank white page… If I just go to https://www.telstarfans.nl/forum/ I get a white page… same with https://www.telstarfans.nl/forum/index.php

So I can’t get to your forum that way.

If I go to your website and click the forum link in the menu I get a different URL and a blank white page.

I think you need to sort out whatever is keeping your forum out of the picture here and the proper URL to the forum.

You might try stuffing just any old RSS feed URL that is acceptable into your widgets temporarily to prove the widgets work.

But that forum link may be the issue and I’m not convinced WP is the problem as I can’t view the forum from here in Virginia.

Let us know if we can help you further and a call to your web host might be a good idea as they may be able to see the whole ‘big picture’ from their console.

BTW, what you are seeing from BNS may be a cached feed…

I followed your advice and used other RSS feeds in my wordpress RSS plugins, and they all work fine. I also tried the RSS feed of other SMF forums and they work fine too.

The issue you mention about not being able to reach my forum, I looked into. Turns out when I use the URL including www. those URLS don’t work for large parts of the day. The URL without www. always works. So I changed all URL’s to the version without www. for now.

These two issues might have started occuring at the same time, so might be related? I tried putting in the RSS feed URL with and without https://www., but that did not change anything.

All was solved by simply switching the RSS option on SMF off and then on again…
