• Hi,

One of my readers emailed me this morning saying that his RSS feed had over 60 entries in it, going back to September. This has happened a couple times before.

I disabled a plugin dealing with RSS last night, so I’m guessing that’s what caused the problem. But I’m not sure. Does anyone know why this happens?

  • I’m assuming that you do not want 60+ entries to be showing up in your reader’s feed, correct? Can you provide some more details?

    • What RSS plugin are you using? Are you using the latest version of this plugin?
    • Are you using any feed services such as Google’s Feedburner, etc.?
    • Are you using the latest version of WordPress?

If your reader is viewing the feed in his/her browser, ask them to clear their browser’s cache and try accessing the feed again.

    Thanks for responding.

The 60 entires were old posts, dating back to September. They all just suddenly appeared in his feed reader (he was using Google Reader).

I was using a plugin called FeedSmith Extend. I disabled the plugin last night, and I think that’s what caused the problem.

    I use Feedburner, and I’m running WP v 3.2

    Anyone?

    Is the problem still there?

I’m not sure that the problem is “still occurring,” but I’d like to know what caused it in the first place so I can make sure it doesn’t happen again.

I think you are tilting at windmills. It is hard enough to find a problem in real time than to use some sort of forensic approach to a maybe or maybe not computer problem. Good luck! :^)

Ah. Well, I thought that perhaps the problem was a bit more obvious and that someone could have told me, “Yes, disabling the plugin was what caused this to happen. Don’t do that anymore.”

I mean…would you say that I should just keep my fingers crossed and pray that this sort of thing won’t happen again? It’s not exactly a “good” thing when my subscribers see 60+ unread articles from my website, and I’d like to do whatever I can to prevent it from happening again.

Well, you could enable the plugin and see if it happens or keep the plugin off. In the work environment if the workaround works that is good enough. In the developer environment there is a need for the why. Don’t know what to say. I will take luck and superstition over skill and knowledge a lot of the time.

Well, I didn’t change anything, and this morning, somebody told me that he was seeing all of my posts twice in his RSS reader.

He says that he’s going to unsubscribe and then subscribe again to see if that works. Still, I have no idea why this is happening.

I installed the Hyper Cache plugin about 2 weeks ago…I don’t think that should have had any effect on this though: https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/hyper-cache/
