I recall this being a subject some time ago. One which myself and others brought up. You folks said it’d be taken care of. I guess not.

Mind you, I’d deactivated your plugin for awhile and only now returned to it to see this same alert appearing at the top of my WordPress page(s).

Clicking ‘DIMISS’ doesn’t do a dang thing! Maybe I should be happy for no longer being a paid subscriber?

“”The last rules update for the Wordfence Web Application Firewall was unsuccessful. The last successful update check was April 2, 2019 7:28 pm, so this site may be missing new rules added since then. You may wait for the next automatic attempt or try to Manually Update by clicking the “Manually Refresh Rules” button below the Rules list.””

    Hi @lcerura

The issue that you are referring to was fixed for the vast majority of people in version 7.2.4:

Fix: Adjusted timeouts to improve reliability of WAF rule updates on slower servers.

Can you look in the wflogs directory located below and see what the last modified timestamp is for the rules.php file and let me know please:

    ~/wp-content/wflogs/rules.php

    Thanks for replying.

I do see that the file was last modified on April 2, 2019

Within the file itself, there’s no mention of dates and such.

    Hi @lcerura

    Thank you for the update.

When you said, “I do see that the file was last modified on April 2, 2019” – that is what I was looking for.

I would like to have a look at your Wordfence diagnostics report. Please go to the top of the “Diagnostics” tab on the Wordfence “Tools” page. There will be a “SEND REPORT BY EMAIL” button to send the diagnostics report. Enter wftest [@] wordfence [dot] com as the email and @lcerura as the forum username please.

Once you have emailed me the diagnostics report can you reply here to let me know that it has been sent. This is important in the unlikely event that your installation of WordPress is having an issue with sending mail.

‘There was an error while sending the email.’

    Is what I get.

    Hi @lcerura

    Thank you for the update.

Wordfence doesn’t send the diagnostics report, we use the WordPress mail function to send it.

You can try setting up a test Subscriber account in WordPress.

Make sure that the option Send the new user an email about their account is enabled.

If you don’t receive the account creation email (check your spam / junk folder) then WordPress is unable to send mail and you will need to ask your hosting provider why WordPress is unable to send mail.

    Hi @lcerura,

Since we haven’t heard back from you I am assuming you were able to resolve the issue so I am marking this topic as resolved.

If however, for whatever reason, you are still experiencing this issue and it is not resolved please respond to the post, and mark this topic as “not resolved”.

    Thanks,

    Gerroald

    No, nothing’s been resolved.

Just haven’t found the time yet to try and fix that mail problem. It’s not as simplistic as you’d have people believe…in as far as contacting one’s host and having them fixing something.

I’ll be back here again once I’ve got sorted it out…OR once you’ve found a different/better approach to getting that diagnostics report sent out to you.

    Hi @lcerura

You can also use your browser save function to save the Diagnostics page. Place the HTML file and asset directories in a new directory, ZIP it and attach in an email to wftest [@] wordfence [dot] com

Next, click on the Click to view your system’s configuration in a new window link in the Other Tests section on the Diagnostics page. Save the new page that is generated and attach it to the same email as per the instructions above.

Make sure to put your forum username, @lcerura, in the email subject field.

Also reply here when you have sent the email so that I can go and find it.

    Thanks.

    Hi @lcerura

As I haven’t heard back from you then the only thing I can suggest is that you check that the curl extension for PHP is installed on the server.

    Thread Starter lcerura

    (@lcerura)

Hello, thanks for sticking with this and apologies for not being more responsive.

I sent you the zipped files requested

‘and it appears I do have the curl extension installed for all versions of PHP installed on my end.

    Unfortunately, I got the following:

Your message wasn’t delivered because the recipient’s email provider rejected it.

I’ll upload it later to an accessible folder on Dropbox then send you the link.

    Thread Starter lcerura

    (@lcerura)

I Sent over the link to you folks allowing access to the uploaded files at Dropbox.

    Thanks again

    Hi @lcerura

    Thank you for the update.

Please expand the Advanced Firewall Options section on the All Options page. Press the MANUALLY REFRESH RULES button at the bottom.

If you get a response that the update failed then I would like to have a look at your PHP error logs.

In the Log Files section on the Tools >> Diagnostics page you will see download links for four error log files. One is very large at over 600 megabytes in size. Please edit them so that only a couple of days worth of logs is in each file and then email them to me at wftest [@] wordfence [dot] com

Make sure to put your forum username, @lcerura, in the email subject field.

Also reply here when you have sent the email so that I can go and find it.

    Thanks.

    Hi again and thanks!

I tried this two days ago right after your message and The MANUALLY REFRESH RULES worked this time around…or rather, I haven’t, as yet, gotten any warnings.

Why would it work now as opposed to those other times? Or was it due to another update of yours?

    Hi @lcerura

    Thank you for the update.

We haven’t released a plugin update for almost two months so that wouldn’t be related.

There wasn’t anything that stood out in the diagnostics report that you sent, hence my request for the PHP error log files in case they provided any clues.

I will mark this as resolved for you but if it comes back again then please reopen the topic and we can look again.
