Hi, does safari/apple support AVIF formats on both mobile and desktop?

    I can’t see a straight answer online

    Hi @alexlever17,

    Thank you for your message.

The AVIF format has been supported by Safari since version 16. However, you don’t have to worry that something will not work on older versions. Why?

When a browser tries to download an image file, the server checks if it supports the AVIF format (if enabled in the plugin settings). If so, the browser will receive the equivalent of the original image in the AVIF format. If it does not support AVIF, but supports the WebP format, the browser will receive the equivalent of the original image in WebP format. In case the browser does not support either WebP or AVIF, the original image is loaded. This means full support for all browsers.

    Best, Mateusz

    Thanks for explaining.

If i install the plugin and convert all my images, then if the plugin is removed/deactivated at a later date, will that mean that all the images are also removed with it?

@alexlever17 When activating a plugin, the plugin stops working. When you remove it, images converted to WebP and AVIF are deleted.

Okay. Is there a way to only convert certain images?

In this case, it might be safer to duplicate a few of them and then convert those ones.

@alexlever17 I don’t quite understand. What are you afraid of?

It’s just in case I’m forced to remove the plugin at a later date due to a plugin conflict. It makes the website quite vulnerable if it’s reliant on one plugin like that.

If there a way to exculde certain images from being converted?

@alexlever17 Your images will be safe at all times. The plugin does not modify the original files. WebP and AVIF files are saved in the /uploads-webpc directory.

You can exclude images from the entire directory from being converted. This is possible in the Advanced Settings tab in the plugin settings.

However, you can convert all files without any worries. In case of problems, simply uninstall the plugin in your WordPress dashboard. The plugin will clean up everything after itself. You don’t have to worry about anything

Ah I see, so the original images won’t be removed if i deactivate the plugin?

@alexlever17 Your original images will never be deleted or modified. When converting images to WebP and to AVIF, equivalents of the original WebP and AVIF files are generated. So you have 3 files in total – original, WebP file and AVIF file.

    Thanks for making that clear.

Does your plugin also resize images to the appropriate sizes for each browser/device type too?

@alexlever17 No. This is what your theme you’re using takes care of.

    Understood.

How much of a difference does AVIF formats make over Webp?

Is the loading time significantly faster with AVIF?

@alexlever17 Please give me your website URL and I will give you the exact result you can expect.

On average, images in AVIF format are 40-50% lighter than images converted to WebP only. So the difference is substantial.

I see, thank you. I’ve posted the link below. I’m still using JPGs for my images, so my page score is low.

@alexlever17 Thank you very much. Here are my test results:

    • original images on your website weigh 2.32 MB
    • images converted to the WebP format will weigh 1.22 MB
    • images converted to the AVIF format will weigh 0.62 MB (and will maintain the same or better quality compared to WebP)

More details can be found here.
