• Today my WordPress site, which had been loading fine, stopped loading. All I would get was the page header (title and navbar), then nothing more. But “Inspect element” showed the code was still there, just not loading. I normally use Safari on a Mac.

I tried a number of things.

    1. I had recently been testing 4 different optimisation plugins. I had been using Autoptimise, which minifies CSS and javascript. But after testing I deactivated it and the others I had been testing, as my host provides sufficient optimisation. So I wondered whether I was now missing something in Autoptimise’s absence. But reactivating it made no difference.

    2. The site loaded correctly in Google PageSpeed Insights.

    3. When I used Chrome, most of the pages loaded OK, but two, including the Home page, loaded without the CSS. When I checked with “Inspect Element” I saw that my own CCS file was trying to load from an Autoptimise version, which it couldn’t find. So I re-saved the page, and the normal CCS file returned and the page loaded. This was fine, but didn’t explain why Autoptimise had changed the CSS for this page only. And when I went back to Safari, everything was still the same.

So it seems like I had two different issues – (1) the Autoptimise CSS problem, which appears now to be fixed, and (2) only the header loading in Safari. I can find no logical reason for this, as it was all working in Safari when I left it a couple of days ago.

Has anyone got any thoughts on this please? Any explanations for any part of these problems would be informative for me thanks.

I’ve looked in Firefox, Chrome, and Safari and I can’t see the error anymore. I can tell you that using more than one optimization plugin can cause a variety of problems. I’ll bet you were seeing different things in different browsers due to different caching policies.

Thanks for checking. But I’m still experiencing the same problems. I can view or work on my site on CHrome, but Safari just freezes after loading the header, or sometimes without loading anything.

Here’s a curious thing that may be a clue. When I first tried to load the home page tonight after reading your comment, it loaded the header and the hero image, loaded a couple of words, and then froze. After that, it was back to what I said.

So there must be something that stops the load after a certain time or point, and that point isn’t always exactly the same. I have no idea how that can be, but it is what happened.

Yes, I understand I can’t use more than one optimisation plugins, but I tested them sequentially, not all at once. Now I have none activated except the server side caching and NGINX Helper plugin suggested by my webhost (Inmotion).

I’m still experiencing the same problems – I can’t “see” my self-hosted WordPress blog on Safari, but I can see it on Chrome & Firefox, and I can also see the dashboard on Safari. And I can see my other blog that is structurally very similar (just different in content and styling) fine on Safari also.

Something strange has happened, and I wonder if anyone has any other suggestions please?
