Safely updating and adapting a live WP site

  • I am taking over managing an existing website. My client wants to limit downtime but would like multiple major changes made to it. New templates, pluggins etc etc

    Does anyone have a best practice way they would recommend? Or warnings of what not to do!?

    I am thinking duplicate the site and database at another domain name for testing and development.

    When the client is happy I then get the old domain name repointed at the new site.

    That other domain is not necessary btw. Just install a new WP in a subdomain or subfolder. Make an export of the database of the live website and import it into the new. (You can hide the testsite behind an htaccess password or so.) When you’re done you can use the same track back, or use the ‘moving wordpress’ article in the codex.

    I guess the reason I liked the idea of having a separate domain was that if the transfer went wrong I could still revert back to the original site. And the repointing of the domain seemed safer than moving files etc.

    Maybe I am just a coward!
