sale badge for variable products

I have some variable products where some of the variations are on sale but others are not.

If any variation is on sale, the “Sale” badge appears on the product photo and all the variation photos, including variations that are full price. This is causing some confusion for customers, who wonder why it says “Sale” but the price is not marked down.

Is there some way to restrict the sale badge to only display for variations that are actually on sale? I’ve researched this on Google but not finding any information.
