If you are new to WordPress, you need to be aware that you should be very be careful about which plugins you use (performance, security, etc.), but there are a few that are almost vital to having a site that performs well. I consider this to be one of them!
When I first started using WordPress, I was compressing images (via tinypng.com) and then uploading them. What I didn’t realize, initially, was that every time I uploaded an image, WordPress was creating a bunch of different sized thumbnails to use throughout the site.
Once I was aware of this, I checked the image sizes of the thumbnails and found them to be larger than desirable. Obviously, fixing these manually would have been awkward and terribly time consuming, so I decided to research optimization plugins.
All my research pointed to one: Resmush.it, and I’ve found it to do an amazing job.
