Saving reading settings resets Featured Content setting

  • HI,

    I’m using the latest jetpack plugin on a clean wordpress install to develop a theme. I want to make use of the featured content setting which is all going fine, apart from this odd issue.

    Whenever I save any changes in the “Reading Settings” the “Featured Content” tag setting gets reset to blank in Customize – Appearance.

    Is this a bug or have I caused the weirdness?

    Do you have content on your site that are using tags? Related Posts will not show anything unless we find three related posts to display. In addition, your site needs to be connected to WordPress.com in order for the posts to be indexed and displayed.

    Also, have you added Related Posts support to your theme? This support doc explains how to do so and may clear up your questions:

    It’s not the Related Posts that I am having issues with, but the Featured Content. They are separate features?

    From that page you linked to – “Featured Content allows users to spotlight their posts and have them uniquely displayed by a theme.”

    I have done this: “Go to Appearance → Customize, and set a tag under Tag Name in Featured Content.” and set featured to be the tag but whenever I then change any settings in the WordPress “Settings – Reading” it resets the value to blank in Appearance → Customize.

    I have added Featured Content support to the siteI am developing, and it’s working well. You can see it at https://mfh.corkydev.co.uk – there are two posts with the “featured” tag and they are displayed in the slider fine.

    The issue is with the settings being reset.

    My apologies! That’s what I get for reading too quickly. :/

    I’ve tried to replicate the issue using Twenty Fourteen, and I get a similar issue where the checkbox for “Hide tag from displaying in post meta and tag clouds.” gets unchecked if I edit anything under Settings -> Reading. I can’t duplicate the tag field getting blanked out, but I can change the tag to something other than “featured” and it gets changed back to “featured” when a change is made in the Reading settings.

    I’ve submitted this issue to GitHub to get our developers to look into it. You can follow the progress of this problem there: https://github.com/Automattic/jetpack/issues/787
