Hello. I need to know how to use a child theme to save my customizations, prior to installing an update. The theme in question is ‘PINBOARD THEME’ by ‘ONE DESIGN.’ I changed the background, darkened the text, and a few other things. I really would like to keep it that way. I’ve already exported all content from the Tools menu, but what do I do from there? Thanks in advance for your answers.

  • Did you make changes in theme files (i.e style.css) — or just in theme options? If only options/settings, you should be fine. Those won’t be overwritten.

Here’s the how to on a child theme:

But be aware that when you change to a child theme, you’ll need to redo changes to the parent theme – they are not carried over (same with changing to any other new theme).

I made the changes through the Options menu, not in code. That’s the next question – in what folder does this file ‘style.css’ reside? Point me in the right direction and I can do this! I’m finally sitting down, about to read the Codex now. Thanks so much, I’ll let you know if it works.

In most themes, style.css is in the theme’s main folder.
