When I run a wordfence scan I’m getting the following error:
Scan terminated with error: There was an error connecting to the Wordfence scanning servers: cURL error 35: SSL connect error

I have have had my web host update openssl and curl to the latest versions.
They’ve also checked that the server can connect to Wordfence servers and it works ok.

I’ve also tried everything in the “steps you can try” link with no success. The plugin was working fine until March 14th.

@wfasa It’s fixed! According to tech support, they needed to update curl to the latest version.

Should I mark this as resolved, since other people are getting help in this thread?

    Hi @knittingand!

Thanks for the update. Happy to hear you got it resolved! I think we can set this to resolved for now. For those of you who are having problems, please follow @knittingands solution and make sure your hosts update cURL on your server. If that’s been done and you are still having problems, please start a new thread here in the forum so we can deal with each case individually.

    Thanks!

I spoke too soon. Still having problems with one of the sites on my server! I’ve contacted my web host support again. I can’t write to the wordfence plugin directory even though permissions are set correctly. And that site is still getting a curl error. Hopefully they’ll have a fix by tomorrow. All other sites on the server are working properly now.

@wfasa It’s send to you. Thank you

I also have the same error. and have sent the diagnostics to wordfence. I am self hosted on a Windows Home Server 2011 and can not find any way to update the mentioned OpenSSL.

I’m too having a failed scan completion, seems to be with ssl maybe, I’m sending the report as described at top of thread.

    Sorry for the late reply.

@barrypoore – Your diagnostics show that cURL Version is out of date.

@robineb, @dstrouse – In your case it’s the SSL Version.

Additionally all of you have outdated PHP versions that are no longer supported by the developers of PHP (they no longer receive security fixes). If you upgrade PHP, cURL and SSL Version will typically be upgraded at the time so that’s what I would recommend. Reach out to your host if you need assistance. It’s very important to have up to date and secure server software. Upgrading will also increase performance on your sites, so that’s another good reason to do it!

I self host my site on a Windows Home server 2011 machine. How do I upgrade the PHP, cURL and the SSL?

    Hi dstrouse,

Wordfence is not officially supported on Windows and I am unfortunately not a Windows server expert myself. I would recommend that you try to find a forum related to Windows servers and hosting and see if you can get help there with how to maintain your Windows server.

    Hi @wfasa,

I have been struggling with this error below:

    Connecting to Wordfence servers (https):
wp_remote_post() test to noc1.wordfence.com failed! Response was: cURL error 35: SSL connect error

Checking if web server can read from ~/wp-content/wflogs:
    File “wafRules.rules” does not exist
Checking if web server can write to ~/wp-content/wflogs:
    File “wafRules.rules” does not exist

    And the SCAN is returning:
Call to Wordfence API to resolve IPs failed: There was an error connecting to the Wordfence scanning servers: cURL error 35: SSL connect error

Is there any chance you might helping me?

My e-mail is [email protected] and my page is https://simplesmenteale.com.br
My site seems to be infected and I need your plugin working on it.

    tks in advance.

Hi @boyna. The issue is the same as I have described above. Your server software is out of date. Update PHP on the server to a recent version. Make sure cURL and SSL Versions are up to date as well. Usually they are updated automatically when PHP is updated. We recommend PHP 7.

    HI @wfasa,

I just emailed you my diagnostic report. My error was noticed when I was trying to setup two step authentication for another admin user. Scanning is not working either: I am trying a few other things, but if you have a chance to look at that, it would be helpful.

I did just recently update my site SSL. I didn’t know if I am supposed to do something in wordfence?

    Hi @wfasa,

I realized that my OpenSSl needed to be updated and that fixed the problem.

Please disregard the file sent over earlier.

    Have a wonderful week!

    HI @sammyjh1!
Glad to hear your issue was resolved.
