I’m sure this question has been asked and I’m just not using the correct search terms to find the answer.

Various sources advise disabling the default WP Cron behavior in WordPress and then scheduling a cron job to periodically run wp-cron.php?doing_wp_cron. This always seems to be presented as an either/or scenario.

Is there anything wrong with doing both? As in leaving WP Cron enabled and also scheduling a cron job to run periodically? This would ensure WP Cron can run normally, but also ensure it is run even during low-traffic periods.

Are there any problems this configuration could cause?

  • Theoretically this should not provide any issues. Unless you have very heavy loads being handled by the cron system. If you leave it on, and have a regular system cron running the same script it could happen that one visitor to your site gets to do a part of the cron. This could slow the site down for that visit.

I would turn it off. There is no use having the webbased cron running when you are doing the same already from the system and can only complicate things. Those are the same exact same things, just being fired diffferently.
