The screenshots do have to be updated — for one, the Essential settings page is missing. ??
The Free / Basic plugin offers complete and extensive meta tags — certainly much more complete and extensive than All in One SEO Pack (which NGFB extends in the Pro version). I guess if you’re looking for just the most basic meta tags, then that would be an option. Another good plugin for basic social meta tags is Yoast SEO. In the end though, even the Free version of NGFB offers a more comprehensive set of meta tags and Schema markup (for Google’s social Knowledge Graph and Pinterest).
The Pro / Power-user version also offers Advanced settings and custom Social Settings for each Post / Page (along with support for 3rd party plugins and APIs). These should be better identified in the screenshots — thank you for the reminder — I will probably remove them completely when I get a chance tomorrow (there’s no use including them here since they’re only available in the Pro / Power-user version anyway). ??
Aside from the Advanced settings page and Social Settings metabox, all other screenshots should be accurate. I’ll double check tomorrow when I get a chance, just to make sure.
As for the sharing buttons — I agree that there are a number of great alternatives — NGFB offers a set of basic sharing buttons, but that’s certainly not the core functionality of NGFB. Sharing buttons only send the page URL to the social site — the important part, and what NGFB excels at is providing the meta tags and Schema markup for social crawlers when a URL is shared (by a sharing button or any other means).
Considering the available features in the Free / Basic version, and the support offered, I’m not sure that 2 inaccurate screenshots warrants a 1 star review, but I guess that’s always in the eye of the beholder. ?? One person’s gem is another’s colored rock. ??
