• Hi,
A site I have been working on had ranking drop, not major but from page 1 to bottom of page 2. However, when we looked at search console it showed 2 new errors appeared the day before the drop which were:
    xmlrpc.php returning error code 405
    and
    /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php returning error code 400

I have spoken with Google who have confirmed that is an issue but are about as much use a as a chocolate fireguard when it comes to fixing it.

they said, “if it shows in search console it most certainly is not normal”

However, i cannot find any advice anywhere on how to fix this. Its becoming quite a big issue now.

So far I have replaced the xmlrcp file (with fresh one) but error remains. dont even know where to start with the other.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Did they change how they test the site? Because those two files are the ways that the outside world can interact programmatically with the site, and they will return errors if their parameters are not correct. It sounds to me like Google wasn’t probing those before and now they are. But they shouldn’t really be part of their findings for “Search”.
