• I noticed that the search function on my website stopped working right around the time I updated WordPress to 5.6, about a week and a half ago. I’ve tried disabling the plugins I have updated since then and clearing the cache, but that hasn’t done the trick. I tried disabling all the plugins using the troubleshooting function of “Health Check and Troubleshooting,” but then the search option just doesn’t show up at all. I also tried installing the “Enable jQuery Migrate Helper” plugin, but that didn’t fix it.
The search function on my site is next to the menu – usually clicking the magnifying glass opens a search box, but right now nothing happens when you click on it. I’ve tried in Firefox, Chrome and iOS Safari. (The backend searches of pages and products do work; it’s just the website search that’s not working.)
Thanks for any help you can give!

  • Hi there,

If you temporarily activate a default WP theme, does the problem go away?

I just tried that on my staging site and the search does work on the twenty twenty-one theme. It looks different, though – in my theme, the search is in the menu bar and the search field only shows if you click on the magnifying glass, and in the twenty twenty-one theme, there’s a search field already showing at the bottom of the screen.

Hmm are you using a page builder as well, like site origin, elementor, divi?

No – I think anything custom in my website comes from my theme, which unfortunately isn’t getting updates anymore. But it’s been working fine up till the last week or two when the search stopped working.
