Search only category x or categories x,y,z

Maybe a plugin that enhances WP’s basic search feature.

been looking …can’t seem to find one, is there a codex page on the search functions? can’t find that either

It is a “real WP site”. It is even listed in the Codex.

There is also something called “search everything” – see the Extend > Plugins section.

thanks but the search everything in an inclusive search, where as i need more of a restricted search on a per page basis, so if i am in the news-funny category the search option by default searches only that category and any child categories, but by the user clicking a checkbox (for example) the search is site wide or vice versa default is site wide check to search only category xyz

i think the search in category plugin is a good place for me to start, not too good with php, but I’ll see what i can get with some code tweaking
