Hi Tobias, hope all is well ??

Previously I have always used Firefox extension search and replace to make quick changes in the tables, but for whatever reason this has stopped working. The changes are made, but when I hit save and then go out and back in again, the changes have been restored. It is very odd as it doesn’t seem to save these changes, only when I do them manually.

    Hi,

thanks for your post, and sorry for the trouble.

Nothing really changed on the “Edit” screen in recent versions, and I’m obviously not doing anything to prevent such changes from being saved. I can therefore only assume that this Extension is somehow doing things differently than before…

    Regards,
    Tobias

Hi Tobias, thanks for the answer. However, the problem is that it’s not just limited to one single extension. I don’t get it to work with any search replace extension. Hence, wouldn’t it be a good idea to have an in built such feature?

    Hi,

I do have plans for a global/search replace (also in all/multiple tables tables at once), but nothing readily available yet.

If the extensions don’t work, you could try exporting the table to a CSV file and do the search/replace in a text editor, and then re-import the CSV file — at least as a workaround.

    Best wishes,
    Tobias

The odd thing is that it actually makes the changes, I can see the changes/edits being done. Then I click save and all good. But when I exit and enter the table again, it is not saved. When I edit manually the exact same things, it is indeed saved.

So why doesn’t the table save the changes just because I used a search and replace? It’s such odd behavior.

    Hi,

my guess is that the extensions only change the data in the visual representation of the table, but not in the internal state (basically in JavaScript code), which is the “source of truth” when the data is saved.

I have no idea what that means. In my reality, an edit is an edit, whether I do it or a search and replace. But I guess not in this case. Oh well, I will try a different approach. Thank you for responding.

    Hi,

well, an edit is an edit, but if it’s not the actual data that is edited, but only the rendered copy, this mismatch occurs, I guess.

Ok, and just out of interested, this happens due to WordPress or Tablepress?

    Hi,

essentially due to how TablePress handles the table data in the browser.

Ok, that is good to know at least, because it has been driving me crazy. I know it wasn’t always like this. It used to work before. Cheers.

    Hi,

yes, this probably worked in the old editing interface, before TablePress 2.0. This change was introduced in the new interface and is part of the reason why it’s much better capable of dealing with large tables.

Unfortunately, this is another drawback, it appears ??

Got it. Let’s just wait then for the in built search and replace. Many thanks for your kind service Tobias ??
