Search Results Sorting and quantity

Surely this must be possible somehow? I have the More sorting plugin installed so I can have A-Z sorting (which you’d really think would be default out of the box but that’s a gripe for another day!) and it works great as long as you’re in a product category, or a tag, but if you search or use filters whilst not within a category you get no options for sorting.
Likewise it does not display how many results there are for a search result, but does if you use a tag or are in a category. (Again seems stupid as they are not search results surely!)
I’ve been googling all afternoon trying to find a solution, someone must know?
