• Hi, we are having a site developed and are surprised to see blog elements on the search results page (“Recent Posts,” “Categories”). We are told that WP uses the blog template for search results by default. That seems a little off the wall, but okay. If this is the default template, we may ask them to create/use a template that did not have blog elements. (We are also using Relevanssi.) Is this change a big deal or is this a simple change? Thanks for your help.

If they’re creating/modifying a theme, it’s done in the template file search.php. It can be changed to be whatever your design calls for.

Is it a big deal or a simple change? Depends on how the theme is built, etc. I wouldn’t presume to say one way or the other.

Hey, thanks! This is a custom-built site, so there is no “theme.” We were simply told that Search, by default, uses the blog template and that they hadn’t explicitly designed the page.

All wordpress sites must have a theme, whether it’s built from scratch, built from a starter, or downloaded from a repository.

The actual search results page can be customized. If that was not specified in your agreement with the dev, you’ll have to take that up with them.

I can say that it’s often one of those things I overlook when building a site and then scramble to fix at the last minute. But that’s just me.

    Ah, yes, understood. Thanks.

No, we didn’t specify.. I have to admit, I did not expect to have to say “no blog elements on the search results page” though.

I get it. I would probably be the same. I just wish someone had thought to mention that the default search results page used the blog template. No way I would have thought to check that!

    Thanks much for your help.

You could try https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/better-search/ to see if it makes a difference.

Unfortunately, my dev abilities are pretty much at the beginner stage at this point; I am not doing the dev work. This is in the hands of the company who is building the site. It’s been pretty expensive and frankly I am afraid of messing with it. They have offered to “design” the results page but that requires another statement of work and a bunch of money, so we’ll probably stick with blog posts and categories for now.
