    Hi,

    I have situations like that:
Post X is in Y and X category.

    The breadcrumbs look like this:
    page title > cat Y > cat X > post title

How can I make it look like this:
page title > cat Y > post title

    Hello,

    Thanks for reaching out!

To be clear, do you mean that the post belongs to two categories but you want only a particular one to reflect in the breadcrumbs? If yes, you need to ‘select the primary category’ when editing the post. This option is in the right-hand sidebar. A screenshot is here.

    Yes, that’s right.

But unfortunately I don’t see this option “primary category”.

Neither in Gutenberg nor in the classic editor.

(My version is Yoast SEO 15.6.2)

But still, I choce one, and in schema breadcrumbs I have two categories.

    Hello,

You can enable the category to be shown in the breadcrumbs by going to SEO → Search Appearance → Breadcrumbs → Taxonomy to show in breadcrumbs for content types → Posts and select Category, as in the attached image.

    Does this resolve the issue?

I changed as in the screenshot, but still have two categories in breadcrumbs.

    Hello,

You mentioned that you have the right setting in WordPress > SEO > Search Appearance > Breadcrumbs, selecting category in the Posts drop-down box.

You would need to modify your theme to get the primary category from the post information. You can find some information on how to do this here:

    https://kb.yoast.com/kb/implement-wordpress-seo-breadcrumbs/
    https://gist.github.com/jawinn/1b44bf4e62e114dc341cd7d7cd8dce4c

We recommend testing the solutions on a staging site first.

So you think the problem is in the theme ?

@fpablo Yes, that is correct. Are you able to verify whether it is being caused by the theme by setting your site to use a default theme such as TwentyTwenty and then checking whether it resolves the issue?

    (@fpablo)

I checked it right now with Twenty Twenty and I still have two categories in breadcrumbs :/

    Hi @fpablo,

To help us troubleshoot and see if we can reproduce the problem, we’d like to get the following information:

    1. Are the categories assigned to the post parent/child categories? For example, is category Y the parent of category X?

    2. If you deactivate all plugins except for Yoast SEO and use the Twenty Twenty theme, does the problem with the breadcrumb categories still appear? We have a guide with the steps to do this temporarily without affecting your live site here: How to check for conflicts.

    Thread Starter fpablo

    (@fpablo)

    1) X is parent category.
Y is child of Z category.

    2) I turned it like in the instructions and with only the Yoast SEO plugin I only have one level:
    > post title

I am using also Permalink Manager Pro, but when I enable this plugin too, the breadcrumbs are the same, only one level.

    Thread Starter fpablo

    (@fpablo)

    Sorry, i double check.

When I use Health Check & Troubleshooting with Yoast and Permalink Manager Pro on Twenty Twenty everything is ok.

When I use Health Check & Troubleshooting with Yoast and Permalink Manager Pro on Tmy theme also everything is ok.

    So I’m still looking …

    Thread Starter fpablo

    (@fpablo)

    Now i have no idea.

I checked all possible SEO-related, cache or optimization plugins. In troubleshooting mode, everything works fine on my theme.

Do you have any idea for this?
