• Hey guys.

I’ve done a fair bit of search on this topic today, however I’ve not been able to find definitive answers, hence me posting in here and hopefully getting on the right track.

A lot of the threads I see regarding duplicating content across 2 sites get shot down pretty quickly saying there’s no need for it and Google will punish you.

    Let me explain my situation;

I run a classified site for a niche that I am in on https://www.mysite.com
The site has over 300 registered users and is growing daily.
On this site are several hundred active adverts, plus blog posts and other stuff. I use the theme ClassiPress by AppThemes for this classified site.

I want to add to this site and include a venue directory (for shops / events around the country) that compliments the products being listed – its something that’s been requested by the members.

As such I want to install a secondary site at say directory.mysite.com
On this I want to install a new theme – Vantage (also by AppThemes which is a directory theme)

Both sites will be hosted on the same server, and I can install the new site into the same database but use different table prefix.

I’ve read how to use the same users across multiple sites (which is good because I want existing users of mysite.com to be able to comment and add venues / events to the directory.mysite.com site.

I will also be making the theme match my current theme on mysite.com and as such I want to keep the same content being displayed in the sidebar widgets.

The content that is from mysite.com shown in the sidebar of directory.mysite.com will link back to their original posts on mysite.com I don’t want to show the content on the new site.

I just want to make sure that when a new post is added on mysite.com it shows in the recent posts widget on the directory.mysite.com site for example.

So basically the widgets are using the same information as from the main site.

What would be the best way of going about this?

    Thanks for any help.

I’m afraid I don’t quite understand your question. You don’t want to suffer a dup-content issue, or you just wanna make sure your recent posts work properly?

If the issue is to not suffer dup-content, I can recommend you the following options:

    1. Try using excerpts (preferably 150 – 200 characters or so) on the “recent posts” widget with a “more” cut. This will reduce the risk of having huge amount of duplicate content between your sites.

    2. Only display a few posts on the widget, around 3 to 5. Same reason as above.

Hope this clarifies your question a little bit.

Why you don’t use RSS feed to display Post from site A to site B ?

    Hi,

Sorry let me try to explain further.

    I have my main site – mysite.com
This is where all my main content is hosted.
    I have hundreds of members.

I want to set up a second site using a different theme (with different functions) at directory.mysite.com

I will be coding the theme to match the look of my mysite.com

Things that need to be seemless across both sites are:

    1) Users
    2) Sidebar Widgets

The only content that will be hosted on directory.mysite.com will be venues and events. Content in the side bar for things like “latest comments / recent posts” I want to be taken from mysite.com and the links to go to that content on that site.

    Does this explain things better?

So I’m guessing no one knows if its possible to run a secondary theme on a subdomain but using the same content as the main site?
