Security error when adding file to media library

  • I have a website running under WordPress 4.6.7
    When attempting to add a DOCX file to the media library, I get the response:
    Sorry, this file type is not permitted for security reasons.
    A DOC file loads successfully.
    A DOCX file has loaded to this site successfully in the past (presumably, under an earlier release of WordPress).

    Both DOC and DOCX files load successfully in other websites running under 4.7.6 and 4.8.2.

    However, I am loth to update from WordPress 4.6.7 without carrying out extensive tests to ensure that this will not result in further problems.

    Is there another way round this problem?

    The Media Library is for only certain doc types, but I can upload and then link to .docx files for later download (on WP4.8.2), so your host is likely not allowing upload of these file types.

    That said, the biggest problem sites owners and developers ever face is when sites are hacked due to out of date installs and/or allowing upload of very easily corruptible file formats.

    So, I would limit uploads of such file types and always keep sites up to date.

    It is pretty clear that the problem is related to the version of WordPress and has nothing to do with my host.

    I can upload the docx files to the WP 4.6.7 site if I bypass the WP ‘add media’ panel (eg via the host control panel or filezilla). I can then use the files in WP, but this is just a short-term solution.

    I have another website which, because it is not used at present, I could risk updating from 4.6.7 to 4.8.2.
    Before the update, the DOX files failed to upload with the security error.
    After the update, the DOCX files uploaded OK.

    So, it looks like I will have to update WordPress 4.7.6 to 4.8.2 after all.
