• I downloaded some themes, and transferred the folders to the wp-content\themes folder, and I can select one of the new themes in wordpress/wp-admin/theme-editor.php, and it appears to be selected, but when click on view site, I still have the original theme. What am I doing wrong?

No change. I even tried a different browser. Still get the default theme

Did you make sure that each theme resides in its own top-level name folder in the /themes folder? Sometimes themes will extract into several other levels of folders….

Yes the themes folder contains multiple folders, each with a bunch of php files and a style.css

Maybe stupid question but are you activating the Theme in the Administration Panel, Presentation?

Yes, in Theme Editor (a dropdown box) with Select next to it

Oops, I figured it out. I needed to do it in Themes, not Themes Editor

Yeah, that just selects what themes files display for editing. On the first theme page, it shows you what the active theme is. (But I think you just figured that out ??

Is Themes Editor where you would edit it? It says “If this file was writable you could edit it.” Is that just a matter of setting rights, and is that a good idea, or should I edit it offline?

This is somewhat unrelated, but is there any capability you know of where one can change themes automatically, like on a date?

“”If this file was writable you could edit it.” “

You have to chmod the files you want to edit. Use your ftp client if you have one or if your host uses CPanel go into your file manager locate the correct files and change the permissions to 666

Yes I know how to change rights, either with chmod or with FTP (I never heard of CPanel) – although 666 sure sounds evil <grin>

The real question is, is it a good idea (from a security standpoint) to make the files writeable (666 would let ANYONE rewrite it, not just owner or group). Also is there any want to automatically switch templates (like could I set it to switch templates at midnight, and then go to bed)

    You can make them 644.

I don’t recall hearing about anything that would automatically change the theme for you, but I suppose it’s possible there is a plug in out there?

actually, I think you could. Just activate it and go back to sleep ??

but if you do want your users to be able to switch: https://boren.nu <<they have a themeswitcher plugin
