By default Google is showing the first tag it finds in Schema above the SERP Headline, for example 2nd ranking result.

Schema created by Yoast lists all Tags as follows

    “Keywords” : [“Tag1”, “Tag2”, “Tag3”], …

Unfortunately “Tag1” is not the first selected tag, but the first tag in alphabetical order (ordered by WP?).

Since a dedicated tag shown above the header line is just one more way to convince Google users to click onto the linked search result it would be great to have some way to select “Tag1” within Yoast SEO per page.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

    Hello @andreasnoll

Thanks for reaching out about your site’s structured data. If I understand correctly, you have assigned tags to your content, and they are shown in the Yoast SEO structured data output as keywords. Then, Google uses the first tag/keyword (arranged in alphabetical order by WordPress) to rank your page. So, you would like a way to specify a primary tag for the content.

First, I noticed this is a WordPress page and not a post. This means you have used a third-party plugin to add tags to it since categories and tags are only available for WordPress posts by default.

If you added default tags to WordPress posts (not pages), can you confirm if Google still picks up the first tag listed in the Yoast SEO structured data output?

    Hello @maybellyne

thanks for having a look at the topic. The same applies to posts. Google shows the first (of 3) Tags above Header Line:

The alphabetic sorting appears the moment I update the post.

Thanks for following up. When you add tags in WordPress, they are sorted in alphabetical order. This is what gets fed into the keywords schema property the Yoast SEO plugin outputs as an array of the names of tags attached to the post/page. Yoast SEO doesn’t arrange them, it uses what’s already in WordPress, the way it is.

You mentioned wanting to select a primary tag for Yoast SEO to use in the schema property. You may consider creating for a feature request on GitHub. Our product team can then review the viability of this feature.
