Selected category, fixed index?

If I configure widgets with a selected category, and then edit categories, it seems all of the widgets lose their category selection. I’m guessing the index to a category is being stored, rather than the category slug? This might have started when I started using hierarchical categories.

Please let me know if you’d like me to try specific changes or a patch. We have freedom to experiment with this site.
