Started my first new site, changed the theme, added some categories, made a new “home” page and made it a static page. Added content to it.
Made a new “blog” page and selected it as post page. Made a couple posts, selected which categories to be in, added some tags and selected some. They show up on blog page. When i select on xyz category from category widget, it goes to “this page is for xyz category posts and shows a summary of the post, when i select the title, it shows 404–page does not exist. Also I tried using recent posts widget and when i selected the post from side bar it gives 404–page does not exist.

Thank you for responding i finally figured it out. I found the link to emilyrobbins dot com/how-to-blog/how-to-configure-wordpress-to-create-search-engine-friendly-urls-for-permalinks-242.htm
Her post was great. A link to her post should be right next to the custom directions. When i originally changed the custom setting i did not add the .htm to %postname% It should have been %postname%.htm Everything is working now. Thank you and Emily.
