selling modified version of existing GPL themes

First: Ask the original creators of the themes.

Second: Check the terms of the GPL, I think there’s something in there that says you can release modified versions but only if it’s got the same license — i.e. your work must be released under the GPL too.

There is nothing in the GPL to stop you selling your own version of somebody else’s GPL theme, as long as you credit the original creator somewhere in the code.

e.t.a. and I’m not even sure that last requirement is set in stone.

This is an often-discussed topic, right here and lots of other places. It’s my understanding that you can take any work that is GPL and extend it as you wish. You can also distribute that modified work for a financial fee or free of charge; that’s entirely up to you and the GPL explicitly says so. What you can’t do however, is take that same right away from someone else who may wish to further extend your work because you must keep your derivative work as GPL.

The key word that still seems to confuse some people is “free”. It has nothing to do with price and everything to do with freedom.

And when i give it to the person i am selling, i have to tell him it is under GPL.

GPL doesn’t force you have to release anything to “everyone in the world”, so to speak. That’s entirely up to you as part of the “freedom” I mentioned earlier.

Yes, you must make them aware that the work is GPL and they must make any version thay have modified also under GPL. Whether they charge money for it or not doesn’t matter.
