I’ve latest 0.9.3 version of WP Mail SMTP plugin.

Send all WordPress emails via SMTP -> option not working

Use the PHP mail() function to send emails -> option working

Why first option not working? I’ve used it before, and it was working.
Its happening from last 3-4 months. May be I had wordpress 3.5-3.6 version.

I tried with same mail server settings for both…

How can you say it is working as expected if several users, with what looks to be the same configuration – tells you it doesn’t and you don’t even try to repro this configuration?

I will not role-back to older version as I KNOW it worked well in the previous version of WP.

If you wish to seriously check claimed issues about this plugin – than please test it as described and if not – just tell us and we will move on.

You know it worked in the past, you don’t know that every other piece of the system has not changed. Maybe your mailserver changed settings, maybe your hosting provider blocked a port, there are any number of possibilities as to what the cause of the issue might be. If you can roll back to 3.6.x and it works, you’ve likely identified the cause of the issue. But simply stating “it used to work, it doesn’t now”, is not the same thing.

@cyberster: Did you find a solution? If you tried with a previous WP version and it works, but does not work with 3.7.1, please let me know which version works and I’ll look into it further. I also recommend contacting your mail provider to verify if their setup has changed at all.

    Very interesting.
I have made deeper tests, also comparing with another SMTP plugin, and I found that this plugin has a real bizarre security corner case, that is very persistent.

I’m checking it now with my hosting company as this issue is on the border line between the plugin and the hosting server.

I will update here when I have more solid conclusions.

Which plugin has a bizarre security corner case?

@eitanc: I think you said you can send mail without authentication on the test form. Try sending the message to a different domain, so if you’re using gmail, send to yahoo, or if you’re not using gmail, send to gmail. If you send mail to yourself with your own mailserver, it’ll probably always accept it, with or without authentication.

Maybe your config allows you to send email to yourself (so WordPress emails to you would work) but emails to other places won’t.

I have been through all afore noted testing parameters and it is still broken.

I have the same problem as reported by others in this thread: I can send a test email to my gmail account successfully but when I attempt to do it from a php file using mail() it fails.

The “Send Test” must be doing something different than plain old “mail()”. “Send Test” works but mail() does not.

The bottom line for me is that using php mail() does not work.

    Try this:

I’ve just installed this today and had to change the SMTP port to 587 and the security to TLS encryption to get it to work for Gmail.

    Callum,

Plugin will not Upgrade, Activate or Delete!
    I have version 0.9.1 on WP 3.9.1

Here is what I get when trying to update it:

    Unpacking the update…

    Installing the latest version…

Removing the old version of the plugin…

Could not remove the old plugin.

    Plugin update failed.

Gmail works for WordPress via SMTP only after lowering your security settings.

Allowing less secure apps to access your account

Google may block sign in attempts from some apps or devices that do not use modern security standards. Since these apps and devices are easier to break into, blocking them helps keep your account safer.

Some examples of apps that do not support the latest security standards include:

The Mail app on your iPhone or iPad with iOS 6 or below
The Mail app on your Windows phone preceding the 8.1 release
Some Desktop mail clients like Microsoft Outlook and Mozilla Thunderbird
    Access your account

    https://www.google.com/settings/security/lesssecureapps

To help keep your account secure, we may block these less secure apps from accessing your account, and you’ll see a “Password incorrect” error when trying to sign in. If this is the case, you have two options:

Upgrade to a more secure app that uses the most up to date security measures. All Google products, like Gmail, use the latest security measures.
Go to Allow less secure apps and choose “Allow” to let less secure apps access your Google account. We don’t recommend this option because it may make it easier for someone to gain access to your account.

I’m having a similar problem with the plugin. I’m using WordPress 4.0 and it is not working as it previously was. I’ve tried both gmail and yahoo SMTP server information and both fail to send test emails. I’ve also tried sending to different email addresses on different servers. I also deactivated all other plugins and it still doesn’t work.

    The SMTP debugging output is:

SMTP -> ERROR: Failed to connect to server: Connection timed out (110)

    Hi,

I am installing Woocommerce plugin for my cart. I also installed the WP Mail SMTP. when I try to send the Emails it cant works good. I have WordPress Version 4.0 / WP Mail SMTP Version 0.9.5.

    Please help me on this.

    Thanks and Regards,
    -Rams
