Hi, we installed Sensei (not Sensei LMS) on our site several years ago. We are using a membership program integrated with WooCommerce to handle memberships and payments for students.

With some new website scanning software, today I discovered we are running Sensei version 2.0.0! Because it seems you are the same author, I wanted to know if it is possible for us to update to Sensei LMS. If so, how do we do that? Will we need to uninstall Sensei and install Sensei LMS? If so, will all of our courses still be there?

We haven’t received any update notifications over the years, so we are quite distressed about this oversight on our part.

    Thank you for your help.

  • Hi @outofnowhere ,

To clarify a couple of things, did you pay for ‘Sensei’ the few years back? If so, do you have an existing subscription for that purchase? If you do, please contact us in email support here via https://woocommerce.com/my-account/ “Support”.

In general, here are some things I’d suggest before upgrading:

First, set up a staging site. This is basically a clone of your existing site. This allows you to test upgrades, new plugins, etc, without fear of breaking your live site.

Many hosts provide a staging service, where you can do testing without affecting the live site. You can ask your host about this. If they don’t give you a staging site, you could try WP Staging or Duplicator plugins:

    https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/wp-staging/
    https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/duplicator/`

    Once that’s set up:

    – ensure that WordPress is current
    – ensure that your PHP version meets current requirements: https://www.ads-software.com/about/requirements/
    – ensure all plugins/themes are up to date

While you could try simply upgrading from 2.0.0 to 3.12.0 (I’d be curious to hear how that goes!) the more conservative approach would be to grab each subsequent version and update one by one, starting with 2.0.1, and skipping any beta releases:

    https://github.com/Automattic/sensei/releases?after=version%2F2.2.0

Once you know that the upgrade is working on staging, you can duplicate the process on your live site. Please make a backup first!

    Best,
    Cena

Thank you for your reply. Because there was such a delay in getting a response, my client decided to switch to a different method and we have removed the Sensei plugin.
