sent 100,000 notifications

    Hello, I installed about 10 demo sites onto a server with wpsmtp plugin activated, but not configured, and last night they started sending out notifications so many that the company suspended my entire WHM, and I just found out this morning. I got reinstated and just deleted the plugin from all my draft sites, but wondered, what would cause this problem. I am pretty cautious now and will not activate the plugin unless I configure it not to send notifications, but then I will miss the important notifications?

    Thanks for reaching out and we’re sorry to hear about this strange scenario.

    First off, what notifications were sent? Also, please note that if WP Mail SMTP is installed and not configured, then the default WordPress PHP mailer was in use. What mostly likely occurred is that either a contact form was being targeted by a spambot or a plugin/theme or a custom code conflict caused several emails to be sent out.

    By default, WP Mail SMTP should only send out one email a week, which is a weekly email summary.

    Please ensure that all of your contact or registration forms are protected via some form of spam prevention (like ReCaptcha for example) to avoid this type of situation.

    It was the summary, I saw about 100 summary notices in my email account before they shut the server down.

    In that case, it sounds like there was a plugin/theme or custom code conflict.

    • What are the currently active plugins on your website?
    • Did the summaries get sent from all of your demo sites?
    • Do the demo sites have the same plugins/themes?
    • Are you using any custom code?
    • Are you seeing any errors in the Tools>Site Health section?
