SEO – Homepage less rank than internal pages

Keywords for the homepage are dog correction collars. When i look on Google its actually another page on the site that comes above the homepage for those keywords, even though it is less optimised for them.

I have a webmaster account, and i notice when i look at internal links, that it doesnt show any to the homepage, which i find strange as its linked in the footer and menu from every page. Very strange and any views welcome!

I think part of the problem is HOW it’s linked. I find that if you link to your homepage as ‘Home’, it gets better rankings.

If you do a site command in Google UK you will notice that Google does have your homepage indexed:

If it is a new site I would not worry too much right now for which page is ranking higher, sometimes newer sites tend to fluctuate in their rankings in the beginning.

Also, other factors, such as external links, can affect how well a page ranks.

The positive sign is that Google is finding, crawling and indexing your pages.

Thanks Revium, when i have done the ‘site:’ syntax in the past, i never thought to take the ‘www.’ off. So it would appear that the homepage is indexed, but not as a ‘www.’ I think i can set the homepage to ‘www.’ in Google Webmaster Tools, so presumably if i do that it will start indexing the ‘www.’

It is interesting that your homepage does not show up with the site command for both www and non www, but hopefully changing the setting in Google Webmaster Tools will change that. At this point I would not worry too much about it, you know it has been indexed.
