Hello, today i did a google search on some of the keywords i used within both desktop and mobile page. I found myself on page 1 of google, but with the mobile URL, which resulted in a 404 because the page is set to private.

I have read the other suppport topic on SEO on which you stated that a sitemap wont be created for the mobile page, as its set to private. For some reason google managed to crawl this mobile version URL and put it within the results. I did check it on other browsers as well, and removed the cookies.

I immidiately removed the SEO metatags and other variables from the mobile page, and now only use them within the desktop version.

Am i correct that we should only use SEO on our desktop version, and completely ignore the mobile version? I am using Yoast SEO.

    Great plugin by the way!

    Hi @robertkun
    thank you!
Right, you should only use SEO for the desktop version. On the frontend, only one page exists.
Normally, Yoast SEO and other SEO plugins don’t add private pages to the sitemap. Probably it has done it because you set up the keywords and so on, also for the mobile page.
In the case of Yoast SEO and other popular SEO plugins, I will hide the SEO settings and put a warning when you are editing a mobile page, so we are sure this doesn’t happen to other users who don’t know it.

That’s great news. I think the problem occurs when you create a mobile version of a page which already includes Yoast SEO. I noticed that this new created mobile page had the meta-tag of the desktop version, together with the option to have it indexed by google (under advanced settings Yoast).

I cannot recall me putting this information manually.

    Hello Jose,

Today google gave me a couple of messages regarding pages within the sitemap being marked as no-index. It mentioned the desktop URL pages that all include a mobile version.

I think this is because a couple of days ago I removed the meta tag from the mobile pages, and while i was on it i also set these pages to no-index.

For some reason google then automatically sees the original desktop version as no-index as well?

This is a problem because if i remove the no-index from the mobile pages, they show up in google but result in a 404.

I now tried to fix this problem by adding a canonical URL within the mobile page, pointing to the desktop page. Do you think this might solve it? Meanwhile will await google results..

    Hi @robertkun

the best solution is considering only the desktop pages and be sure that the sitemaps don’t have any link to the mobile versions.
If in the sitemaps the mobile pages don’t exist, they will not exist for the crawlers.
They have no possibilities to know that these pages exist if they don’t find this information in the sitemap.

Take into account that if you solve the problem today, you may see the Google results in a few days.

It’s important you check your sitemap and verify it doesn’t include the mobile pages.

Using canonical URL is ok, but a cleaner solution in my opinion is not having the mobile pages in the sitemap.

    Hi @robertkun
do you have any news about the SEO results?

Hello Jose, the majority of the mobile URL’s are now gone from google. There is just one mobile URL that is shown in search results, despite having disabled all SEO on this page. I did not submit it in a sitemap, but it was crawled by google outside of the sitemap.

This isnt a big issue for me, considering its just one link.

Maybe for your reference. If searching for fxhybrid lijntrader, the first result that pops up is from a mobile page, resulting in 404: https://forexhybrid.nl/fxhybrid-lijntrader-mobile/

    Hi @robertkun
as told you in the other thread, I’m working on a new version.
Also, this issue should be fixed in the new version.
