• When using the SEO by Yoast sitemaping feature (sitemap_index.xml) which do you actually submit to google?

    page-sitemap.xml
    category-sitemap.xml
    post-sitemap.xml

Or does google know how to completely handle sitemap_index.xml?

I just want to make sure I’m submitting it correctly to Google.

  • I believe by default, Google looks for /sitemap.xml or /sitemap.xml.gz.

Google will handle sitemap_index.xml just fine, but you’ll probably need to inform Google of the location. The easiest way to do this is signup for a free account at https://www.google.com/webmasters/. There is an area where you can submit the link to your sitemap.

Another way to do this is to define your sitemap in a robots.txt file:
    Sitemap: <location>

Just be sure that all of your posts, pages, and any additional content you want indexed appears in that sitemap file.

    Hi MuchPress,

I have added those sub indexes to my google webtool account, so thank you for pointing that out.

To help things along I also added them to robots.

    Thank you!

** that google xml plugin doesn’t grab enough information, that’s why I had concern, the SEO by Yoast does a lot more.
