SEO title & meta description for attachments

    Hello,
    In wordpress media section, I set title and alt attributes for every uploaded image. When I go to the particular edit attachment pages, there is the yoast box where I can set seo title and meta description for every image. Is it recommended to fill these to in addition to the title and alt attributes that I have set in the media section? Or does one replace the other so that it makes no sense to fill out all of them? I havent understood the purpose of the yoast box in the attachment section yet so any hints what to consider would be really appreciated. Thank you.

    The media (attachment) page is a special type of page in WordPress that automatically generates for all the media files and that has no content but only includes the media file. So, if you’re wanting to see the media (attachment) pages in the search results, you can optimize them.

    For my site, Dev Chatterjee, I usually always noindex and nofollow all media and taxonomy attributes.

    If you’ve set your attachment pages to noindex then there’s no need to optimize them so you can simply ignore the Yoast metabox or even disable it for media pages (SEO > Titles & Metas > Post Types).

    But setting the attachment to noindex doesnt make sense for product images of an onlineshop, does it? I want my product images to appear in google image search results, so I guess I should index them and seo optimize them – or am I wrong?

    I’ve set the media attachment pages to redirect to the product pages – so if you click on an image in google image search it will redirect you to the related product.

    So what do you recommend? Should I optimize every product image with Seo title and meta description or will this have no effect because they are redirected to the product pages?

    Thanks for the response! There are two different issues. We have responded to them both below.

    A. Attachment page to noindex
    If you do not want the attachment pages (these are special pages which hold only an image) we suggest marking it noindex as described. These attachment pages are different than the images that appear in a Google Image search. Google will still index the actual image url but not the attachment page.

    B. SEOing Product Attachment Pages
    If the media attachment pages are redirected back to the product pages then we would say there is no reason to SEO those product attachment pages. Your visitors won’t see them and if you noindex them neither will Google.

    Ok thank you very much for your explanation.
    So, if my goal is to find as many of my images indexed in Google image search, I should
    1. Just set title and alt attribute in the media upload/edit section AND of course:
    2. Seo optimize the product pages to which the images are redirected.

    Is this correct?

    We’ve responded to both issues below.

    1. Setting a title or alt-attribute won’t SEO the image for a Google Image Search. Those only work for the page rather than the actual image. We suggest using this guide to help optimize images for a Google Image Search: https://yoast.com/image-seo/. There is also a section on things to consider when adding the image to a post which you may find helpful too.

    2. Yes you should SEO the product pages to which the images are redirected. This guide explains more: https://yoast.com/product-page-seo/
