    Hello,

I’d be very grateful if someone could please help me. I installed the Yoast SEO plug about 4 months ago as I was hoping to be able to specify my own custom SEO title wording when my website appears on Google searches.

I have typed in “Wedding Pianist | Romantic Piano” in Yoast’s SEO title box as that is the SEO title wording I would like to appear. However, when I search on Romantic Piano Wedding Pianist on Google, the SEO title for my website appears as follows:

“Wedding Pianist | Romantic PianoWedding Pianist Christopher…”

This looks a bit of a mess and obviously does not match what I put in Yoast’s SEO title box. I hasten to add that my WordPress Site Title is “Christopher Langdown Wedding Pianist”, so it seems that (rather annoyingly!) this is automatically being tagged on to the end of what I put in Yoast’s SEO title box.

If anyone could possibly explain why this is happening or how I can prevent it I would be really grateful.

    Many thanks,
    Chris

  • We’ve checked the source code of your site and found the following as your SEO title:

<title>Wedding Pianist | Romantic PianoWedding Pianist Christopher Langdown</title>

If you are using a static page as your homepage (Settings > Reading), make sure to set your SEO title on the chosen homepage. Otherwise, you can set the title under SEO -> Search Appearance -> General. Can you confirm if this has been set correctly? If the issue persists, can you send us a screenshot of your SEO settings?

Many thanks Jerparx, I’m very grateful to you. You are quite right that I am using a static page as my home page so I’ve set my SEO title to “Romantic Piano | Wedding Pianist”. Now that I’ve done this, shall I just delete everything in the Yoast SEO title box and leave that blank?

    Best wishes,
    Chris

If you’ve set your homepage as a specific static page, then what would load under SEO (sidebar) > Search Appearance > General > Homepage & Frontpage is a hyperlink that would take you to edit that specific post or page. Please feel free to edit the SEO title and meta description in the Yoast SEO meta box by clicking on the ‘edit snippet’ button and then save the changes, and that is what should be the expected output in the page source afterward.

Thanks Michael. Because I have my home page set as a static page, it seems to me that whatever text I put in the WordPress Site Title will ALWAYS appear in the SEO title on Google searches (no choice). Although I can try and edit the Yoast SEO title using the “Edit snippet” function, it seems that this still does not stop/override whatever wording has been used in the Site Title from appearing in Google searches. Is that correct or should the Edit snippet function be able to override everything?

What you set as the SEO title in the ‘edit snippet’ in the Yoast SEO meta box should overwrite any default templates. However, it’s totally possible that Google would show a different title from what your preferred title is. There are many reasons for this, which you can learn more about in this article — https://kb.yoast.com/kb/google-shows-different-titles-for-my-site/

OK, thanks Michael, that’s very useful to know.

Good morning, I also have the same problem (only on the home page). Could you help me? The site is this:
