Seperate Featured Image Sizes for Posts and Pages

I only see ways of adding image sizes

That how you would start – by using add_image_size() to your theme’s functions.php file. Then you woul;d need to reference you new, custom, post thumbnails via the appropriate template file in your theme – e.g. page.php for pages, a special News category template etc.

Would this method stop WordPress from creating an instance of every size for every image uploaded?

Something like this:

<?php if ( has_post_thumbnail() ) : ?>
        <?php the_post_thumbnail('my-custom-image-size'); ?>
<?php endif; ?>

Change to your own custom size name. It will make one image for each custom size, unless width and height are set to zero (0).

Thanks, but I was really hoping to find a way to stop the redundant images from being created.

For example:

If you’re creating a Page and upload a featured image, only 1 version with a specific size is created.
And,
If you’re creating a Post and upload a featured image, only 3 specific versions are created using specified sizes.

Ideally, the images uploaded within Posts will not be duplicated using the size specified for Pages and the images uploaded within Pages will not be duplicated using the sizes specified for Posts.

Within the Media Settings, I have set all of the Image Sizes to 0 but it’s still uploading multiple versions.

I’ve got a feeling this may be due to interference from Woo Commerce, but I’m not sure.

I dont know any way to achieve it. Not without heavy trickery with code and generating images from original on the fly.

Dont know. Depending of how many Posts and visitors you have can slow down website visibly.

I personally would first try “Fly Dynamic Image Resizer”. The other one “WP Performance pack” is a bit to much code and options.

Best way to do it is when all is done and if website is already huge, many Posts & Images, to use crawler to make all images to be prepared on server when real visitors come.
