serious garbage text issue – no one has responded, please help!

  • (I don’t know what version I’m using)

    Our website has major problems with garbage text (e.g. in place of quotes, apostrophes and dashes symbols I don’t have on my keyboard that mean nothing).

    About every four-six months garbage text will suddenly appear on a posting (sometimes all the punctuation and sometimes just some), and then it will start to be on more and more and more. Not everything is eventually affected, but most. I’m not sure how much is initially affected because I don’t start seeing it until I look around for it to fix it.

    What’s confusing is three things:
    1. the delay – all posts go up normal looking and stay that way for quite some time
    2. inconsistency – some posts are affected, some are not, some fully, some hardly, and some sentences are even half affected so beginning quote, for example, is fine but end quote is not. also, a summary page (https://www.cornucopia.org/category/reports/) will show garbage text in the postings, but clicking on the postings shows the garbage text not there.
    3. no one else seems to have this?! I have spoken with my two favorite techies, one who is extremely proficient in word press and one who is an html genius. None of them have found much, though they aren’t as bothered by it as me – it takes a long time to search the whole site and individually fix each post.

    HELP please. Anything. I haven’t a clue. But I have, per request, been posting things into notepad now before putting into Word Press, though I don’t know why or if it will help.

  • Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-related problems.
