• Hi there,

I installed 2.2 last week and everything was going swimmingly, I was only receiving about one or two spam comments every day.

However in the last 24 hours my blog has gone spam mad! I’ve had nearly 100 in that period and they keep coming. I have Askimet installed but it doesn’t seem to be trapping anything.

Am I doing something wrong? Please help! Thanks…

    :-Joe

Good point. No I didn’t deactivate all my plugins, which was probably silly of me, I didn’t realise that was the way to do it. However I have deactivated all of my plugins and then just reactivated Akismet… And although it says it is running, obviously it has issues…

Right, well just deactivating and reactivating won’t do much, until you get someone trying to send you spam from this point on. Akismet doesn’t retroactively mess with stuff in moderation. That stuff is there for you to deal with as you need to.

You need to test it though, and make sure Akismet is now working, and will filter any spam that comes through *now*. Once you verify that, with all plugins off (save Akismet) it’s working as it should, then you can start reactivating your plugins and testing to find the culprit – if that is indeed the problem.

my aksimet died when i upgraded
it looked like it was on and running but i just found 1800 spamz waiting for me

nuked the plugin, reuploaded the same file, reinput api
    works perfectly now

    just my 2¢

Yeah, I deactivated my plugins before my upgrade.

kerusdotorg: I have tried to reupload the akismet.php and reinput the api key but with no good result.

I put in the option that every comment have to be moderated by a admin before it is posted on the site.

Can anyone give me the address when akismet tries to connect to there server from my blog?

    The Connection string..

    @kerusdotorg:
You say you “nuked” the plugin… What steps did you take… Deactivated, then deleted and replaced?

I replaced last night and it didn’t “nuke” it at all. The API key was still in the field. Where does it keep its prefs? Maybe I should delete those first.

I can answer my own last question.
Can anyone give me the address when akismet tries to connect to there server from my blog?

    The Connection string..

Found it on this site: https://akismet.com/development/api/

jowie: I tried to empty the api key box and then save. tried it 2-3 times before my key was deleted from the box.

then I tried to re-enter the key and save. But key cannot be validated bla bla. ??

so now my api key box is empty and i cant activate the akismet plugin ??

have you guys found any answers?

manne80: Sorry, but it’s just a problem on your end for some reason. I just installed the plugin and put in a key and activated it on another blog I setup. It worked without any issues at all.

The plugin works. The servers are up and running. I don’t know what more to tell you.

    New update:

Well I wasn’t getting anywhere with Akismet problems, so I installed reCAPTCHA which puts a squiggly word on the page to avoid spam getting through altogether. And it works a charm! ??

And guess what… Now I’ve done that, my Akismet API key is working again ?? ah well, at least I have fort-knox-level security on there now ??

    Otto42:
did you use the same API key or did you get a new one?

    jowie:
Looked at your ReCAPTCHA. Don’t like the look of it, the design. it would mess my design on my site ??

Well, hope something happens. Want my key to work :/

    deleted, double post.

This was a site for another person, so I created a new wordpress.com account for them (did that a while back actually) and I used their API key.

Otto42: Okej, that doesn’t help me. Maybe my Api key is fu**ed up?

jowie: I installed the recaptcha plugin just for fun, and I verified the 2 keys for it. and it worked like a charm.

    akismet wtf

You’re not putting spaces in after the key are you? I can’t think of why you’re having problems other than your key is somehow wrong.

Go to your WordPress.com account and copy/paste the key from there directly.
