• I cannot find an SEO forum so am posting here. My problem is that I have a new website most of which is working beautifully, but when I do Google queries on the name of the publishing company, one of the authors and one of the books, results all show a link to the Home page with varying descriptions. This is fine for the first google, but I want the others to show specific pages which provide information about the author and the book. Any help would be appreciated. Lyn

My last attempt to post failed – this is a test.

OK here goes, I’ll type it in again.
The reason the searches are all coming up with the Home page is that both the author’s name and the book name are mentioned on the home page, one in a slideshow photo and one in a widget showing feature title. Even though I can work out why it is happening, I don’t know how to change it.

If you want ot change this you need to change the focus of your SEO efforts to get more links to the inner pages instead of just the home page. That’s pretty much the only thing that’s going to help do what you’re looking for. Any results are purely at the “mercy” of Googles ranking algorythm, so they are the only ones that can do anything to help you, but they are also not exactly public about how it all works.

Thanks. I’ve been trying to do that with Yoast SEO plugin but doesn’t seem to make any difference so far. I thought that perhaps there was some WordPress default where searches found and stopped at the first mention of a name etc.?

No, there’s nothing like that. Google indexs pages the way that it wants to, and there’s nothing that you can do to change that.

The only real way to get the other pages higher in the results pages are to get good quality back links to them, and make sure that their on-page SEO is pretty good (don’t make it perfect… that can be harmful too in some cases).

SEO is about patience, and not getting concerned when things change. pages will always appear at different levels on the results pages no matter what you do. Well, unless you have got a huge site like Wikipedia or Apple or that sort of thing, but you get the idea.
