I have the exact same problem. I’m running Windows XP SP2 with all kinds of additional update patches. I have Download Express installed and use AVG Antivirus. I tried disabling AVG but that didn’t help.
I also tried disabling various Internet Explorer settings that I thought might be getting in the way a€?? things like downloading across domains, certificate validation, etc. None of these measures helped.
All download attempts ended after about two seconds with a “412 server not found,” or something like that, error message.
I rebooted into Redhat 9 and downloaded the 1.5 package using Mozilla without any trouble.
I also use MSN and have the MSN Explorer browser. When I went to the download page using it, I was able to download the 1.5 package in the blink of an eye.
The problem here, it seems clear, is that Microsoft is throwing out all these security updates and patches for XP and IE6, and there’s no telling what side effects they’re going to generate on various systems. It’s kind of like Granny Cratchitt and the 39 different prescription pills, dozen vitamins and several herbal capsules she takes every day. Something goes wrong and then some poor emergency room doc has to try and sort it all out. Good luck.
If you of anyone has found the exact culprit, or if one of the WordPress programming/site wizards can make an adjustment, please post something. I’m quite sure if this is happening to two of us who’re are leaving messages, it’s probably happened to a bunch who haven’t been heard from.
